The effects of Supportive Group Counseling on Social Support, Self-esteem, and Psychological Well-Being of the Developmental Disability Mother of Children

Abstract

|
This study was conducted in order to examine how supportive group counseling has an impact on social support, self-esteem, and a sense of stability of the developmental disability mothers of children. The program was made up of the 16 mothers with the developmental disability children who were going to Handicapped Children Education-Care Centering Busan. Total sixteen participants were divided into two parts, eight of whom included the experimental group, and the rest eight were the controlled group. Supportive Group counseling program was conducted to the experimental group, while no program was conducted to controlled group during the same period. Results showed that Supportive Group Counseling program had profound effects on improving Social Support, self-esteem, and a sense of stability of the psychological of the Developmental Disability mothers of children. And these effects were maintained up to 4 weeks after the program.
Therefore, this study showed that the program helped Developmental Disability mothers of children to recover positive emotion and to adapt herself society psychologically, further more, it suggested that it contributed to playing an important role in being a mother.
